HDV Sync Problem Revisited

In a previous post I wrote about how I was having audio problems with HDV exporting from Final Cut Pro. I thought I had found a solution but the problem came back.  So I tried exporting using Apple’s ProRes 422 codec (1440×1080, 60i, specifically).  It took all night to export and ate up 120GB of disk space, but I’m reviewing the output and the audio and video appear to be synced up.

Wrong Aspect Ratio in Final Cut Pro

Sometimes working with 16:9 aspect ratios can cause problems, especially when moving video from Final Cut Pro to iDVD. The problem seems to be from exporting to Quicktime from FCP. If a video that should be 16:9 comes out as 4:3 after export, I have a little trick for fixing it.

Open the file in Quicktime.
Hit cmd-j
Click on “Video Track”
UNCHECK “Preserve Aspect Ratio”
Change “Scaled Size” from 720 x 480 to 853 x 480
Press the “Return” key

Out of Sync HDV Audio in Final Cut Pro

I was working on a big HDV project in FCP yesterday and I was nearly finished with it.  After checking the export from Final Cut Pro I was annoyed that the audio got more and more out of sync as the track went on.  When you edit precisely to the frame, all your hard work is destroyed if it is out of sync.
