Wrong Aspect Ratio in Final Cut Pro

Sometimes working with 16:9 aspect ratios can cause problems, especially when moving video from Final Cut Pro to iDVD. The problem seems to be from exporting to Quicktime from FCP. If a video that should be 16:9 comes out as 4:3 after export, I have a little trick for fixing it.

Open the file in Quicktime.
Hit cmd-j
Click on “Video Track”
UNCHECK “Preserve Aspect Ratio”
Change “Scaled Size” from 720 x 480 to 853 x 480
Press the “Return” key
Close the window and [...]

  1. Open the file in Quicktime.
  2. Hit cmd-j

  6. Press the “Return” key
  7. Close the window and save your 16:9 aspect ratio video.  It should look correct when you bring it in to iDVD now.
